Add, Waitlist, or Cancel a Class

Add a class

Students may add classes during the first two weeks of a term.

Permission Numbers

Each college determines how their students obtain permission numbers. Permission numbers are required to

  • register for a class after the second day of the term (even if it is listed as open in the online Class Schedule),
  • register for a closed class, or
  • override prerequisites for a class.

Registration for classes is the student's responsibility.

If granted permission to enroll in a class, a student must get a permission number and then register by the end of the second week of the term, since permission numbers are valid only through the end of the second week.

Waitlist a class

When a class is closed online, students may add their name to the waitlist option in the online Class Schedule. The waitlist will be sorted, based on priorities like graduation, declared major, etc. If a class has no online waitlist, a student may pursue the following, based on which collegiate unit offers the class.

  • College of Education and Human Service Professions (CEHSP) (120 Bohannon Hall)
For all psychology classes, the online waitlists are managed by CEHSP staff in 120 Bohannon Hall. Permission numbers are not given out for psychology classes. CEHSP will register students as seats become open. For all other classes, students must contact the department first; then contact the instructor to find out options.

  • College of Liberal Arts (310 Kirby Plaza)
Students must first contact the department, then contact the instructor to find out about options.

  • Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) (111A LSBE)
Access to most LSBE classes is managed through the online waitlists. The LSBE Student Affairs/Advising Office manages the lists.

  • School of Fine Arts
Art and design classes are managed through online waitlists. For music or theatre classes, students must contact the department or instructor to find out about options.

  • Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) (140 EngrB)
Waitlists for biology, chemistry, mathematics, and statistics are online. Waitlists for computer science 1000- and 2000-level classes are kept in 140 Engineering Building. For all other SCSE classes, contact the department or instructor for waitlist information.

Cancel a class

Canceling even one credit may change a student's financial aid eligibility. Therefore, if they drop credits, students are advised to contact One Stop Student Services, Solon Campus Center 23, for further information. Students who cancel a class through the eighth week of a semester may be eligible for a refund. See Important Dates).

These guidelines apply:

  • If canceled before the end of the second week, the class will be deleted from the record, without a W on the transcript.
  • If canceled between the third week and the end of the eighth week of a semester, the class will remain on the record, marked with a W as the grade.

Canceling classes after the end of the eighth week of a semester is not normally permitted. Exceptions require that a University of Minnesota Duluth Petition form be filed.

Student must do the drop himself or herself.

When a student stops going to class, the class registration is not dropped automatically; the student must do the drop himself or herself.
