Grading changes effective fall 1997

Effective fall 1997, the grading system changed from using the P-N symbol to using the S-N symbol. The S represents satisfactory achievement but does not carry grade points. The major change is that the amount and quality of work required for an S may not be less than that required for a grade of C. Instructors should define for the class at its earliest meeting the performance necessary to earn an S.

There are two additional changes:

1. A bachelor's degree requires that at least 75% (135 quarter credits) of the degree-qualifying resident credits carry various forms of A, B, C, or D grades.

2. The grade point values will be:

A = 4.00
A- = 3.67
B+ = 3.33
B = 3.00
B- = 2.67
C+ = 2.33
C = 2.00
C- = 1.67
D+ = 1.33
D = 1.00
F = 0.00
S = 0.00

For all credits earned through SSII 1997, the grade point values will be as shown in the 1995-97 University of Minnesota, Duluth Bulletin. Your new cumulative GPA will be a mixture of the values.

If there are concerns or questions, go to your collegiate student affairs office, or contact Karl Johnson, Associate Registrar, 139 DAdB, 726-7849.
