Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC)

The Minnesota Transfer Curriculum is a collaborative effort among two- and four-year public colleges and universities in Minnesota to help students transfer their work in general education. Completion of a defined transfer curriculum at one institution enables a student to receive credit for such work upon admission to any other participating institution. This transfer curriculum consists of ten areas of competency and completion of these is certified at the sending institution.

Students who transfer to UMD and have completed the MnTC elsewhere have met UMD liberal education requirements and are not required to complete additional liberal education course work.

Students intending to transfer from UMD to public colleges and universities within Minnesota, and who wish to fulfill the MnTC must adhere to the following general requirements:

  • Complete at least 40 semester credits. These could include credits transferred to UMD from another institution.
  • Only a maximum of ten credits of S-N courses apply to the MnTC.
  • Satisfy the ten specified competencies of the MnTC. All competencies must be complete at the time a student transfers out of UMD. Note: The MnTC competencies differ from the UMD liberal education categories. Completing UMD's liberal education program does not necessarily mean that the MnTC competencies are also complete.

To see if you have completed the ten categories for the MnTC, follow these steps:
  • Go to http://www.d.umn.edu/students/, and click on "APAS Report".
  • Sign on using your internet ID and password.
  • Click on "Generate a What If APAS".
  • Change the university to University of Minnesota Duluth.
  • Change the collegiate unit to College of Liberal Arts.
  • Scroll down to Minnesota Transfer Curriculum.
  • Generate report.

These competencies and the manner in which they can be satisfied are as follows:

Competency 1 - Communication

Competency 2 - Critical Thinking

Competency 3 - Natural Sciences

Competency 4 - Mathematical/Logical Reasoning

Competency 5 - History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences

Competency 6 - The Humanities and Fine Arts

Competency 7 - Human Diversity

Competency 8 - Global Perspective

Competency 9 - Ethical and Civic Responsibility

Competency 10 - People and the Environment

Notify Jodi Lieske, jlieske@d.umn.edu, Office of Financial Aid and Registrar, once you have completed the MnTC for the MnTC notation to be added to your transcript. Please specify if you are transferring to the Twin Cities campus.
