Reciprocity Tuition Rates 2011–2012

Residents of any of these states or provinces may qualify for reciprocity tuition rates which are lower than nonresident tuition rates and, in some cases, comparable to resident rates.

To receive reciprocity

Graduate and undergraduate students must apply for reciprocity prior to the term in which they plan to register. The student will receive an approval letter from their home state when their reciprocity application has been approved. After their first year, their reciprocity will automatically be renewed, provided they have earned credits on campus. Delays in reciprocity eligibility will not exempt a student from additional billing charges.

The student's home state will notify the University when the reciprocity agreement has been approved. If a student's billing statement does not reflect reciprocity tuition, the student must bring the approval letter to One Stop Student Services to obtain an adjusted registration statement.

Wisconsin students enrolled Fall 2008 or after, who have applied for and been approved for reciprocity, will be assessed the Minnesota resident tuition rate (see UMD Semester Tuition and Fees 2011–2012), and also will receive the Wisconsin Reciprocity Supplement grant from the State of Wisconsin.

Who is not eligible for Wisconsin reciprocity?

Wisconsin residents enrolled in extension or distance learning courses offered in Wisconsin by Minnesota institutions are not covered under the reciprocity agreement; nor are Wisconsin residents enrolled in courses, programs, or institutions that do not charge a non-resident tuition rate, but charge a tuition rate other than than the resident rate to all students enrolled in the course, program, or institution, regardless of state of residence.

North Dakota, South Dakota, and Manitoba residents

Students from these states are charged the Minnesota resident tuition rate (see UMD Semester Tuition and Fees 2011–2012).

Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, and Nebraska residents–Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP)

The University's new nonresident tuition rates are lower than those under the existing reciprocity agreement with MSEP. Effective fall 2008, students from MSEP states will pay the lower nonresident tuition rate (see UMD Semester Tuition and Fees 2011–2012).
