Tuition and Fees

Tuition pays for approximately 67% of the costs of instruction at the University of Minnesota. The State of Minnesota pays approximately $4,277 of the average cost for full-time students.

Tuition at UMD is assessed according to your student classification and program, your residency status, and whether you come from a state or province with which the University has a reciprocity agreement. In addition to tuition, you may be charged fees based on a variety of criteria.

Once you register for classes, you are officially enrolled and committed to attend. You must pay for any course for which you register unless you officially cancel online during the 100% refund period. If you cancel after the 100% refund period, you must pay for any portion of the course(s) for which you do not receive a monetary credit.

Beginning in fall 2008: Change in tuition structure for new nonresident and Wisconsin reciprocity students

The University of Minnesota will change its tuition policies and practices for undergraduate nonresident and Wisconsin reciprocity students, beginning with new students matriculating in fall 2008. Learn more here.

2007-2008 Academic Year

Effective Fall Semester 2007, UMD has restructured the undergraduate tuition policy in favor of a tuition-banding strategy. All credits above 13 per semester will now be tuition-free. All undergraduates will pay a flat tuition rate based on a 13-credit load; credits 1–12 are assessed at a per-credit rate.

The tuition band is a way to help students reduce the cost of their education, since students who take advantage of the band and graduate in 4 years rather than 5 years pay significantly less. To graduate in 4 years, a student on average must complete 15–16 credits per semester.
