Registration checklist
Review this checklist before you register! The helpful hints below will help you avoid frustrating delays.
Check your registration queue time or appointment time to learn the earliest date you can register for classes for the upcoming semester. A queue time is assigned to each student each semester.
Check for holds on your record, and for the names of the offices where you can clear them. If you have a hold for a past due balance, an immunization form, a library fine, or another hold that prevents your registration, you must clear it before you can register for classes. Clear your holds as soon as possible.
Review your APAS report for each major and minor to see which courses you still need.
Meet with your adviser to plan your credit load and courses to stay on track for graduation. Schedule an appointment with your adviser. Bring with you a tentative schedule, a copy of your Graduation Plan (https://onestop2.umn.edu/gradplanner), and a list of questions (degree requirements, elective options, internships, study abroad, etc.).
Know the name and policy number of your hospitalization insurance company or HMO, as you will be asked to provide this information when you register for classes. If you register for more than six credits and you do not provide your insurance information, you will be charged for the University insurance plan.
To see if space is available in the courses you want, check the Class Schedule online. If a course you want to register for is closed or full, use the WaitList option, if it is available.
Get permission numbers if your course requires instructor, department, or college approval. Note: All permission numbers expire after the end of the second week of the term.
To register for overlapping classes, get a petition form at your collegiate student affairs office. Obtain both instructors' signatures on the petition and return it to your collegiate student affairs office.
To register for graduate credit when you are not admitted to a graduate program, get approval from the department offering the course. Note: These courses do not qualify for financial aid.
Contact Continuing Education (CE) if you are registering for Independent and Distance Learning (IDL) courses, cross-registering, or are not pursuing a degree or certificate program.
