The Department of Economics Alumni Events have
been scheduled for Spring 2006;
Tuesday, April 4: Breakfast at the Kitchi
Gammi Club in Duluth, 7:30 to 9:00 a.m.
Thursday, April 20: “Wine and Hors d’oeuvres” reception
at Gluek’s Restaurant in Minneapolis,
4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Students:
Scholarship
Jim Davis Scholarship Application forms are
now available in the Economics Department (SBE
165). Scholarship applications are due no later
than March 27, 2006.
The requirements for this $750 scholarship
are:

Be a full-time economics major at UMD
•
Have at least junior standing at the time of
application
•
Have a GPA of at least 3.2
•
Complete an essay of 500 words (double-spaced,
typewritten) describing what, in your opinion,
will be the most important economic issue in
the 21st century (e.g., labor, environment,
international trade, etc.). Be sure to define
the issue and why it will be of importance.
Econ Club
The Econ Club meets every other Wednesday (beginning
February 15, 2006) at 5:00 p.m. Fall semester
club members attended the Minnesota Economic
Association meetings in St. Paul. Plans are
being made to tour the Minneapolis Federal
Reserve and attend the Winter Institute in
St. Cloud. “Dinner with a Professor” will
continue Spring term and other social events,
such as bowling, are being planned. Work
continues on developing the Duluth student

UROPs
Four economics majors
are working on UROP projects with their faculty
sponsors. Andrew
McColley is working with Dr. Bedassa Tadesse
on a project titled “Has the African
Growth and Opportunity Act Increased the Trade
Flow Between the USA and Eligible African Countries”.
Dr. Doorn is working with Paul Hochsprung on
his project “Interest Rate Spreads and
Deviations from Purchasing Power Parity Across
Countries”. Leah Kasper is also working
with Dr. Doorn and with Dr. Jennifer Schultz
evaluating the effect of State Children’s
Health Insurance Program coverage on the take-up
rate of employer-provided health insurance.
On his project, sponsored by Dr. Curt Anderson,
Matt Burris is exploring alternative energy
choices at UMD. Nitya Malik is completing an UROP with Dr.
David Doorn, Dr. Rick Lichty and Dr. Maureen
O’Brien. She and David Doorn will be
attending the National Conference on Undergraduate
Research in April.
Faculty
Jennifer Schultz and David Doorn have both
been awarded a University of Minnesota Grant-In-Aid
of Research, Artistry and Scholarship. Jennifer
will be investigating the implications of rising
employer health insurance costs while David
will be examining employer provided health
insurance and the demand for part-time labor.
David and Jennifer collaborated on a related
health care issue and received a grant from
the W.E. Upjohn Institute.
