Economics is the study of social, business, and individual decision-making and the goals,
incentives, institutions, and constraints affecting those decisions. Economists study how
society distributes scarce resources such as land, labor, raw materials, and machinery to
produce goods and services. They conduct research, collect and analyze data, monitor
economic trends and develop forecasts. Most economists are concerned with practical
applications of economic policy using their understanding of economic relationships to
advise businesses and government agencies. To develop and enhance the critical skills
necessary for these types of positions, the Department of Economics curriculum combines
classical liberal arts and modern quantitative approaches.
