Chair ’s Welcome
Welcome! The Finance and MIS Department is glad you’ve taken
time to learn more about us and what we offer.
FMIS is home to two majors with the Bachelor of Business Administration
degree -
Finance and Management Information Sciences.
The Finance major prepares students for careers in investments, banking,
or corporate settings. One of the largest majors in the school, finance
attracts students who want to put their quantitative skills to work
in a fast-paced sector of business. The addition of the Financial Markets
Program in 2002 added a new dimension to our offerings, one that allows
students to manage a substantial portfolio of investments from business
donors.
The MIS major is a multi-disciplinary program that emphasizes the
study of systems development methodology and technology for our rapidly
changing society. The goal is to develop project leaders and information
resource managers who can address organizational needs with technical
solutions.
FMIS is a dynamic unit that blends energy and experience to create
exciting learning opportunities for our students. Here are just a few
examples:
- We welcome three new faculty members to the department
this year. Dr. Saiying Deng, Ph.D. (Finance)
from Temple University, joins the department as an Assistant Professor
of Finance. She will
be teaching in the Financial Markets and
Institutions, and Risk and Insurance areas. Her primary research
interest is in the diversification
and firm performance in financial services
industry. Dr. Qiming Wang, Ph.D. (Finance) from the University of
Alabama is our other new Assistant
Professor of Finance. In addition to his
academic qualification, Dr. Wang also has a CFA and working experience
in the finance industry.
He will be teaching in the Investments and
Portfolio areas and will be a valuable addition to our Financial
Markets program. Qin Lian,
who is a Ph.D. candidate in Finance from
the University of Alabama, joins the department as an Instructor
and will be teaching the Corporate
Finance courses for us this academic year.
- The Financial Markets program continues to grow and
prosper under the leadership of Joe Artim.
The students enrolled in this year’s class are ready to
maximize our investors’ returns...but
would appreciate a little help from an improved
market.
- Several successful alumni will return to campus for
this year’s edition of Professor for a Day.
- The Finance Club and the MIS Club are gearing up for
another exciting year. Speakers, tours, and
competitions are on their agenda.
- Faculty are active in research and have several recent
presentations and publications. Students
are encouraged to become involved in research projects through
the Undergraduate Research
Opportunity Program.
