Welcome to the website of the Department of Management Studies in the Labovitz School of Business & Economics at UMD. Our department has close to 20 faculty members with expertise in the areas of entrepreneurship, health-care management, human resource management, organization management, marketing, and strategic management. We are proud to serve close to 500 students who are majoring in HRM, management or marketing. Our faculty are also heavily involved in graduate education both in Duluth and Rochester.

Our department has exceptionally dedicated and highly qualified faculty. We have been recognized for our exceptional teaching, advising, and research scholarship. As a group, we have been awarded practically every teaching award that’s out there for UMD faculty, including the Horace T. Morse Award, Jean G. Blehart Distinguished Teaching Award, Beta Gamma Sigma Outstanding Professor Award, SOCC Professor of the Year Award, and Hormel Meritorious Teaching Award. Our faculty have also won the campus-wide Outstanding Advising and Service Awards. One of our colleagues won the campus-wide Outstanding Researcher Award recently. Our faculty have consistently contributed to the body of knowledge in their respective fields. We publish in a variety of refereed journals in our disciplines and several members of our faculty have highly successful textbooks to their credit.

Our distinguished faculty are also very active in community service and participation. We work closely with the Center for Economic Development (CED) on Student-to-Business Initiative projects. Our student teams have provided consulting help to more than a 100 small businesses over the past few years. Our faculty serve on Editorial Boards of journals and provide valuable service to professional and academic organizations in various capacities.

We are a student-centered department and take pride in creating a learning environment that promotes creativity and a desire to learn. The Management Studies Department provides its students with several opportunities to enrich their learning experience beyond the classroom. Our students can enroll in several of our student clubs such as ADMAR, SHRM, and PSE, among others.

Our students find placement in a variety of organizations: small businesses as well as large corporations, for-profit as well as non-profit organizations, and privately held as well as publicly traded businesses. Graduates of our programs have been hired by firms such as IBM, Best Buy, 3M, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Federated Insurance, Kohls, Land’s End, Philip Morris, Target, UPS, Metlife, Hershey Foods, Medtronics, Wells Fargo, and Johnson & Johnson.

If your goal is to receive quality education in human resource management, marketing, or organization management, LSBE and the Department of Management Studies have the means, resources, and dedication to help you with that!

Happy surfing!
