Lab Policies

A note about these policies: The following lab policies were developed by fellow SBE students, faculty and staff members. Since this is the first time we have setup a technology lab for the School of Business and Economics, we do not know whether these policies will be completely effective for our purposes, and they are therefore subject to change. Critical to the success of the lab is the ethical use of the facility by all students. Please carefully review the policies outlined below.

Time Limits: Students are expected to optimize their use of the SBE Lab. To maximize lab availability to all SBE students, there will be a three hour limit on lab use. This will be monitored by the Lab Coordinator. When room is full, access will be given via a signup sheet on a first-come, first-served basis.

System Access: Students wishing to use the SBE Lab will be required to show their student ID upon entering the room.

Food and Drink Prohibited: Due to the damage that can be result to lab property from food and drink, these substances may not be consumed in the SBE Lab at any time.

Disruptive Behavior: The SBE Lab is a place of study and learning; loud conversations and other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

Summary of Ethical Use of SBE Lab:
(Ref: http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/policies/appuse.html)

  • Follow the rules and regulations governing the use of UMD facilities and equipment.
  • The SBE Lab is your lab; the effectiveness and efficiency with which it runs depends to a great extent on you. Use the lab intelligently and with courtesy. Police yourself - you share responsibility with the Lab Coordinator for monitoring its use.
  • If you notice anyone using the facilities that you do not recognize as an SBE student, please ask the Lab Coordinator to investigate, or contact the Dean's Office.
  • Bring any problems or suggestions to the attention of the members of the Computer Lab Advisory Group.

Lab Use Priority Guidelines:

  • Highest: Uses that directly support the educational, research and service missions of the School of Business and Economics (SBE).
  • Medium: Other uses that indirectly benefit the education, research and service missions of the SBE, including reasonable and limited personal communications.
  • Lowest: News reading.
  • Forbidden: Game playing, recreational web-surfing, other unauthorized use of the systems and network.

Downloading Data – images, music, spreadsheets, documents, etc.: The Lab has been paid for by SBE students to enhance their educational experience. Therefore, students are asked to show consideration for their colleagues by not abusing the privilege to download material not directly related to their educational endeavors. Legitimate downloading of data should be done on removable media, such as floppy diskettes or CD-ROMs. Any information that remains on the hard drive will be removed daily.

Printing: While printing will be available to SBE students in the lab, printing should be limited and reasonable. Lab personnel will monitor the use of printers and advise students when there are concerns. Charges for printing are to be determined and are not known at this time.

Checkout of Equipment: As part of the SBE Lab grant, SBE students have access to digital camera and digital video-camera equipment. This equipment can be checked out using the same procedure as for laptop checkout. Interested students should contact Don Krueger (151 SBE, x7319) or Sally Burkholder (x7440) in the Dean's office.

Sanctions for Misconduct: UMD’s School of Business and Economics will take all violations to the computer and network policies seriously. Students may be subject to any appropriate sanctions provided under the university student conduct code.

Your comments and suggestions on these policies are appreciated. Any questions, suggestions or comments regarding these policies should be directed to Don Krueger, SBE Technology Director, dkrueger@d.umn.edu. Thank you.
