The Dean

Dr. James P. Riehl

James P. Riehl is a Professor of Chemistry and came to the Swenson College of Science and Engineering in August 2000 from Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan. In addition to his duties as Dean, Dr. Riehl maintains a research program for work largely centered around the use of circularly polarized light in experiments aimed at probing the structure, reactions, and dynamics of chiral molecules in solutions.

The Associate Deans

Dr. Stanley G. Burns

Dr. Burns served as ECE Department Head at the University of Minnesota Duluth from 1998-2007 and was appointed an Associate Dean in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering and Jack Rowe Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, May 2007. His research interests include microelectronics processing, analog circuit design, sensors, and instrumentation. He is a Principal Investigator for the UMD Northland Advanced Transportation Systems Research Laboratories. Dr. Burns teaches courses in semiconductors devices, and analog electronic circuit design. Prior to that coming to UMD, he was a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Iowa State University. Professor Burns has twice received the National (IEEE) Outstanding Advisor Award for his work with the Iowa State University (ISU) IEEE student branch and received the ISU College of Engineering Superior Engineering Teacher Award. He is active in the ASEE, Senior Member of IEEE, a member of the Electrochemical Society, and a registered Professional Engineer in Minnesota and Iowa. He received the B.S.E.E. (1967), the M.S.E.E. (1968), and the Ph.D. (1972) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Penny Morton

Penny Morton is a Professor of Geology and has been Associate Dean in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering since 2009. She has been at UMD since 1979. As Associate Dean she has responsibilities in student affairs, faculty development, and academic affairs.

The Assistant to the Deans

Ms. Janny B. Walker

Janny Walker, Assistant to the Deans, responsible for public relations in the College and student recruitment, orientation, advisement, and registration.
