UMD gained some national recognition last weekend when CNN featured the groundbreaking work of three U of M research scientists about new life saving innovations in emergency medicine, two of whom are UMD professors. The UMD UROP Office will fund 30 students and up to 10 faculty/staff to attend the conference to be held at the University of Montana, Missoula on April 15-17, 2010. Applications for travel assistance are due to the office by Nov. 2, 2009 (download student application or faculty application).
Every SCSE student pays $150 per semester to support technology in the College. The Student Tech Fee Committee meets thoughout the year to fairly allocate the pooled funds for many of the technology needs of SCSE students. The Committee will soon be looking for proposals for 2009-2010 that meet use requirements and provide the greatest bang for the buck for SCSE student education. In the fall of 2008, Professor Andrea Schokker was hoping that 25 students would enroll in UMD’s new Department of Civil Engineering program. It would validate UMD’s decision to address the need for civil engineers, both in this region and across the country. When 60 students were enrolled in the new program after the first week, it was very gratifying. "Every day, I’m more excited about this program. It’s clear, we can make an impact," Schokker said.
