ITRAX X-ray Fluorescence Core Scanner

ITRAX X-ray Fluorescence Core Scanner Manufacturer: Cox Analytical Systems

Model number: 6

Location: RLB 15

Faculty member in charge of instrument: Erik Brown; 218-726-8891; etbrown@d.umn.edu

Description of instrument and special capabilities: This instrument (one of two in the United States) is designed for evaluation of sediment cores, but is capable of dealing with a wide range of other materials. It makes high resolution (as fine as 0.2 mm) x-ray fluorescence measurements of a suite of elements in a strip down the axis of the core. Depending upon elemental concentrations present in the sample the analytes can include: Al, Si, P, S, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, Ni, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Zr, and Pb among others. In addition, the ITRAX produces high quality x-radiographic images at resolutions as fine as 0.02 mm.

User charges: Hourly and per section setup charges are assessed, with reduced rates for NSF-sponsored research.
