SCSE Academy of Science and Engineering: 2012 Inductees

The Swenson College of Science and Engineering inducted five new members into the Academy of Science and Engineering for 2012:

Ms. Marianne E. Bohren

Marianne E. Bohren assumed the role of Executive Director of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) in Duluth, Minnesota on July 1, 2008. She succeeded Kurt Soderberg, who served as the Executive Director for more than 17 years. Bohren has been employed by the WLSSD since fall 2004, formerly holding the positions of Director of Organizational Development, Business Services Manager and Assistant Director, where she was responsible for the overall financial performance of the organization in addition to labor relations, human resources and management information systems.

Prior to joining WLSSD, Ms. Bohren worked for 17 years for Potlatch Corporation serving as the Environmental Manager, Manager of Strategic Planning and the Vice President of Marketing and Services. Ms. Bohren has served on the Boards of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, the Cloquet Salvation Army, and the United Way of Greater Duluth. Bohren holds a B. S. in Chemistry and an M.B.A. both from the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

Dr. Brent M. Haglund

Dr. Brent M. Haglund is President of Sand County Foundation and the Bradley Fund for the Environment. He earned a Ph.D in ecology from the University of Georgia where he studied with Eugene Odum and Frank Golley. His research interests had been in ecosystem level effects of weather modification, fire management, and wildlife populations.

Since moving to Wisconsin in the early 1980s from a research position in Montana, Haglund has been continuously involved in private conservation and increasingly in conservation philanthropy. First, he was Director of Land Stewardship for the Wisconsin Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and then State Director for that group. Second, beginning in 1988 Haglund has been active promulgating a land ethic of Aldo Leopold through support of landowner-driven conservation. Sand County Foundation operates internationally to identify, reinforce, and promote private landowner conservation with a land ethic, good science and meaningful market-based incentives.

Dr. Haglund was ecological consultant to the Wisconsin Legislative Council on non-point water pollution, was a member of the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Commission, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Public Utility Institute, and was a private sector conservation advisor to the Cabinet of Premier Nick Greiner, New South Wales, Australia. He has made dozens of presentations on land ethic inspired private and partnered conservation to landowners, philanthropists, and policy makers. His book, "Hands on Environmentalism" Encounter Books (2005) was co-authored with Tom Still.

Dr. John Lindgren

John Lindgren is a 1982 graduate of UMD with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and computer science. He received a Master of Science in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1989. Mr. Lindgren is a Lockheed Martin Corporate Fellow with over 30 years of commercial and national defense aerospace engineering experience. He is currently the lead architect of the Mission Insight Laboratory at the Lockheed Martin Sunnyvale complex. The Mission Insight Laboratory is a multi-media facility studying and demonstrating all aspects of remote sensing technology from collection systems to ground processing facilities.

His research interests include the development of mathematical algorithms for extracting highly accurate geometric and radiometric information from remotely sensed imagery along with imagery exploitation tools and technology needed to study environmental, social, infrastructure and national security problems.

Among his honors are: an NASA Technical Excellence Award for significant contributions to the space shuttle Challenger accident investigation, a NOVA award – Lockheed Martin’s top engineering award for significant contributions to the conception, design, and operational capability of the world’s first high resolution commercial remote sensing system (IKONOS), and several patents related to innovative imaging.

Mr. Terry Swor

Mr. Terry Swor graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in geological sciences in 1966 and completed the UMD pre-engineering program. While a student, Mr. Swor worked for Lake Head Testing Laboratories in Duluth where he was introduced to the engineering geology aspects of modern construction. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Army reserves and later accepted a position at Lake Head Testing Laboratories. Soon after he took a position with Twin City Testing Corporation, working for them from 1967 to 1988 and advancing from field geologist/engineer to senior vice president.

In 1989, with two others, Swor started American Engineering Testing, Inc. and served as the company’s president from inception until 2011; currently he is the company’s chairman and CEO. Growing from a staff of 10 to 350, the company has twice been named "firm of the year" by the American Council of Engineering Companies-Minnesota.
