Large Lakes Observatory (LLO)

The Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) is the only institute in the country dedicated to the study of large lakes world wide. We focus on the global implications of our investigations in the areas of aquatic chemistry, circulation dynamics, geochemistry, acoustic remote sensing, plankton dynamics, sedimentology and paleoclimatology. Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute (GLMRI)

The Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute (GLMRI) was established in 2004 to pursue research efforts in marine transportation, logistics, economics, engineering, environmental planning, and port management. The US Maritime Administration designated GLMRI as a National Maritime Enhancement Institute on June 1, 2005. Find out more

Northland Advanced Transportation Systems Research Laboratory (NATSRL)

NATSRL was established with a charter to investigate transportation issues unique to northern Minnesota, and in particular, those issues related to winter transportation systems for small urban areas. Find out more

Minnesota Sea Grant

With nearly 12,000 lakes and a coast on the world’s largest body of fresh water, Minnesota possesses a bounty of aquatic and coastal resources. Through scientific research and public education programs, Minnesota Sea Grant works to enhance Minnesota’s coastal environment and economy. Find out more

Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI)

This Institute was established in 1983 to encourage economic growth for Minnesota's natural resources-based industries while keeping watch over that growth's impact on the environment. Find out more

Visualization and Digital Imaging Lab (VDIL)

The laboratory is a collaborative facility of the School of Fine Arts and the Swenson College of Science & Engineering. It provides a dynamic multi-media environment for design and scientific researchers to conduct original research in the areas of animation, visual imaging, and scientific visualization. Center for Economic Development (CED)

UMD CED consulting programs provide one-on-one services to business start-ups and existing businesses focusing on feasibility studies, market research, surveys, business plan development, loan packaging, operational assistance, procurement assistance, manufacturing, management, compliance (EPA, OSHA, Revenue and Tax), problem solving, and information technology. Our programs include the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) Business Group, the 21st Century Arrowhead Initiative, and the Student to Business Initiative.

UMD CED also offers business and computer workshops to businesses and entrepreneurs throughout the region to enhance the knowledge and increase efficiencies of area businesses. Find out more
