Funding Available for National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR)

The UMD UROP Office will fund 30 students and up to 10 faculty/staff to attend the conference to be held at the University of Montana, Missoula on April 15-17, 2010. Applications for travel assistance are due to the office by Nov. 2, 2009 (download student application or faculty application).

Student Tech Fee Committee Will Soon Seek Proposals

Every SCSE student pays $150 per semester to support technology in the College. The Student Tech Fee Committee meets thoughout the year to fairly allocate the pooled funds for many of the technology needs of SCSE students. The Committee will soon be looking for proposals for 2009-2010 that meet use requirements and provide the greatest bang for the buck for SCSE student education. Faculty and Students Discuss Their Research on Youtube

The UMD Visualization and Digital Imaging Lab (Viz Lab), a collaboration between the School of Fine Arts and SCSE, prepared several videos on Youtube demonstrating some of the research taking place at UMD. See the videos featuring SCSE faculty Matt Andrews, Nigel Wattrus, Erik Brown and Grad student Kevin Russeth.

Students Present Research at UROP Showcase

Dozens of SCSE students presented their research findings at the annual UMD UROP showcase on April 30th, 2009. Topics were wide-ranging (e.g., "Snow as a Solar Collector", "Vision-Based Detection and Avoidance in Robotics", "Butenolide Sythesis") and involved either presentations to an audience or poster sessions. UMD Student Design Team Selected for International Technology Design Competition in Germany

A UMD student design team has been selected as one of three winners in the North America Region (including USA and Canada) in the 3rd Collegiate Student Safety Technology Design Competition. The competition is sponsored by The United States Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The goal of the competition is to give young scholars around the world an exciting opportunity to design, build, and demonstrate a potentially cost effective conceptual scale model of a vehicle safety technology.

The UMD team consists of Shan Hu, an MIE Graduate Student originally from Guilin, China, and Ryan Bowlds, a Senior Mechanical Engineering Major undergraduate student from Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The team is advised by Dr. Xun Yu, Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at UMD. (read more)
