1) We are now accepting applications for the UMD Archaeology Field School which will take place in Northeastern Minnesota. We will likely be offering a per dieum $ allowance for students; this is dependent on grant applications being funded.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The UMD course Field Research in Archaeology, ANTH 4696, will again be offered for summer session 2008, conducted by UMD instructor Susan Mulholland.  The full 6-week experience (for 6 semester credits) provides preparation for those interested in pursuing a career in archaeology as well as those just interested in seeing what archaeology field work is like.  Partial credit for shorter time commitments is also possible by arrangement.

The schedule is tentatively June 23 through August 1.  Classroom activities (week 1) will include an orientation to archaeology, Federal laws, and identification of archaeological materials; lab analysis (week 6) will focus on artifact identification and interpretation.  Field work (weeks 2-5) will provide 4 weeks of survey and evaluation on in Northeastern Minnesota.

The course will require 40 hours per week, with the schedule varying from 4 to 5 days in a week.  Students are responsible for their own living arrangements while in Duluth and contributions to living expenses in the field.  More details are in the application package.

Interested students should inquire at the Duluth Archaeology Center (218-624-5489); email to suemulholland@aol.com; or leave their name and contact information at the Sociology-Anthropology Department office (218-726-7551, ask for Judy Salyards; soc_anth@d.umn.edu).  Application packets with more detailed information will be available at the Sociology-Anthropology Department.  Note that consent of the instructor is required for registration. STUDENTS WHO ARE ACCEPTED INTO THE COURSE MUST OBTAIN A COURSE OVERRIDE NUMBER AND THEN REGISTER AT UMD FOR THE SUMMER SESSION.

Applications will be reviewed as they come in; please reply by April 28 to ensure consideration.  A maximum of 8-10 students will be accepted so get in touch with Dr. Susan Mulholland (218-624-5489) as early as possible to ensure a place.
