Adult Personality and the

Early Childhood Socialization Practices

of the Kalinga of Northern Luzon1



Through the pioneering work of early researchers a

great interest arose in the 1930's and 1940's in the

problem of the relationship between personality

development and culture (Benedict 1934b; Billig et al. 1947;

Cooper 1933; Fortes 1938; Hallowell 1945a; Kluckhohn 1945).

Sociological and anthropological interest in culture and

personality research has increased in recent years

(Bourguignon 1979, pp. 21-25). In addition, growing

numbers of psychologists have become more interested

in the fact that "culture plays a large role in determining

personality characteristics" (Le Francois 1977, p. 115).

Many researchers have pointed to the importance of studying

socialization practices in their cultural contexts, and

have often concentrated their research on ceremonial

rituals occurring in early childhood (Honigmann 1967, pp.

205-209).

This paper reviews the work of F. R. Barton (1949),

Edward P. Dozier (1966, 1967) and Felix M. Keesing (1962),

focusing on the importance of the ceremonial ritual called

kontad2 in the formation of the adult personality of the . . . .
