OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARDS
- The Department of Sociology/Anthropology will provide up to four "outstanding
student awards" for the 2002-2003 academic year. Three awards are for persons
majoring in anthropology, criminology, or sociology. The fourth will be
for a student with a major in interdisciplinary studies or a minor in cultural
studies or humanities/classics.
- The purpose of the awards is to recognize students who have done exemplary
academic work as reflected not only in course grades, but also in the overall
quality of contributions within the programs offered through the department.
- Awards are given in differing dollar amounts as follows:
- Humanities/Cultural Studies: Fred Schroeder Award--$300
- Sociology: Robert Franz Award--$500
- Criminology: Walter Baeumler Award--$300
- Anthropology: $300 to be divided among the students who qualify for departmental honors
- Awards will be presented at the annual College of Liberal Arts "End-of-the-Year
Gathering" in May.
- Criteria:
- completion of at least 90 total credits by the end of the previous
spring semester
- completion of at least 15 upper division credits in the major (or
12 upper division credits in a minor in American Indian Studies or humanities
and classics)
- GPA of at least 3.0 in the major (or American Indian Studies or humanities
and classics minor)
- Application:
- Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by another student,
staff member, or faculty member. Nominated students will be contacted
to determine if they wish to formally apply for an award.b. Students
wishing to be formally considered must complete the following application
process:
- Write a 300 - 500-word (maximum) essay which explains how their
discipline enriches their understanding of the world.
- Submit a clean copy of a paper completed for a class related
to an issue in the program for which the award is being sought,
OR Write an original paper to accompany the application. The subject
of this paper should be agreed to by the Head, Department of Sociology-Anthropology,
before the paper is submitted, OR Submit a project completed for
a class in the program for which the award is being sought. (Check
with department head for more details about this option.)
- Submit two letters to support the application: one must be
from a student and one from a faculty member, internship site coordinator,
or similar person.

- The application deadline for the 2002-2003 awards in Sociology,
Criminology, and Cultural Studies is Friday, April 4, 2003. See the

- The Sociology-Anthropology Department reserves the right not to make
an award in any given year, based on the decision of the Awards Committee.
