  Personal Development
SSP 1000 • 2 credits

Instructor: Bob Flagler

Course Overview
Looking at components of the human personality and the relationship of the individual to his/her environment, this class focuses on human values, interpersonal skills, decision making, and conflict resolution. Self-concept and self-identity are stressed in terms of developing the whole person, as well as the need to feel successful. Undergraduate teaching assistants provide experienced students' perspectives in weekly, class-related, small group discussions.

Former Student's Description:
"The Class Made Me Feel Like
I Belong in College

Coming to college as a freshman, I had a lot of different feelings about what I was doing. I wasn't really sure who I was, or what I wanted to be like.

By taking Personal Development, I learned about the many different aspects of people and identified with some of them. The ideas about human personalities helped me to realize who I was and who I wanted to be.

Personal Development also taught me about aspects of people that I did not want to be like.

The class also really helped me with the transition from home to the college environment. Personal Development gave me a sense of belonging that I truly missed from being at home and in a smaller school.

The class gave me an opportunity have close relationships with my peers, as I did in high school. In lecture classes with 200 students that you don't know, you are more than likely to be lost and have the feeling of not belonging. This is why I enjoyed Personal Development. It was a small class that made me actually feel that I belonged in college.
