CROSS COUNTRY
Both the UMD men and women's cross country squads had solid showings at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota last Saturday. The men's team took advantage of a strong performance by senior Eric Atkinson and placed second in the team competition.
Atkinson finished third out of 132 runners with a season-best time of 25:34. Also running well for the Bulldogs were senior John Kallemeyn with a time of 26:29 and sophomore Mike Kramer, who finished at 26:45. The women's team finished ninth out of 30 teams and was led by sophomore Liz Palkie, who came in ninth place individually with a time of 23:30. Rounding out the top times for the
Bulldogs were sophomore Katelyn Meger with a time of 24:01 and freshman Whitney Hines who finished at 24:29. Both the men and women's teams will be in action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when they host the UMD Pine Hill Invitational in Carlton, Minn.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The women's soccer team battled the Fighting Sioux from the University of North Dakota to a scoreless tie on Sunday afternoon. The UMD offense peppered
North Dakota with 20 shots-on-goal but none were able to find the back of the net. The Bulldogs' best chance to score came when sophomore Brittany Lyons' shot hit the crossbar midway through the first half. Lyons had another close call in the second overtime, but her shot went just outside the post.
UMD goalkeeper Briana Francisco made four saves to record her second shutout of the season and 15th of her career. It was also the 90th time a UMD goalie has recorded a shutout in the history of the program. The tie brings UMD to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the North Central Conference (NCC).
The Bulldogs return home Friday, Oct. 5, to Malosky Stadium for a game with Minnesota State University-Mankato.
VOLLEYBALL
The No. 3-ranked volleyball team won its 22nd match in a row within the North Central Conference (NCC) with a straight set victory Saturday afternoon over the University of North Dakota. The Bulldogs trounced the Sioux, 30-15, 30-14, 30-21, while playing an away game in Grand Forks, N.D.
The Bulldogs' offense was led by senior outside-hitters Danielle Beckstrand with 10 kills and Kari Wolford who had nine kills. Wolford also recorded a match-high 14 digs. Junior setter Katie Gangelhoff had a good day setting up the Bulldog offense with a match-high 41 assists.
UMD (17-1, 4-0 NCC) will be traveling to Omaha, Neb. to meet with the University of Nebraska-Omaha in a NCC match on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
