Worst of the waves:‘Dey Know’

BY JOHN BROSIUS

ISSUE: 78/24

This week we are going to investigate one of the biggest crimes in music today: A terrible rapper receives a beat that could turn into decent song in the hands of someone with talent but then ruins it. Shawty Lo (formerly a member of the D4L trio, made famous by their release “Laffy Taffy,” one of 2006’s worst wastes of airtime) has murdered a perfectly good beat in cold blood.
The song is currently No. 42 on the Billboard 100 chart, after infecting the airwaves for seven weeks. Shawty Lo, the self-proclaimed mayor of the ATL, is riding into the popular music scene on T.I.’s back, much like a louse rides into your house on a dog’s back. Another southern rapper, who writes lyrics such as “Shawty Lo, he got flava, the girls know he got paper,” in other words, he’s writing lyrics an infant with no understanding of the English language could come up with. Sure, it’s fun to dance to. I get it. I dance to it too, but please don’t confuse this talentless fool with actual music.
