Looking for a place to volunteer for class? Perhaps you might just be looking to get connected in the community. The Office of Civic Engagement will be hosting the Volunteer Fair to provide students and faculty with a variety of involvement opportunities. On Feb. 4, the second volunteer fair of the school year will bring students and faculty together with representatives of over 50 Duluth community volunteer openings. The fair will be held in the Kirby Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“This is basically a way to get student involvement in mass numbers and meeting community needs,” said Jonathan Tupper, a civic engagement service-learning coordinator. The fair will allow students to easily browse possible volunteer options and have a chance to talk with many sites at once. Opportunities for after-school programs, soup kitchens, retirement homes, shelters and hospitals will display themselves and be available to talk about what they do.
“Both community sites and students really appreciate it [the volunteer fair],” said Pete Woitock, also a civic engagement service-learning coordinator. “It really works better.” Prior to the fair, students met individually with coordinators to set up volunteer opportunities. “There is a lot of leg work in setting up the fair, but it makes it much easier,” said Woitock.
Woitock also said that many students that are volunteering are looking to fulfill a service-learning requirement for a class, but that the event is open to anyone looking to get involved. “We are trying to get into the classrooms and promote it along with posters too,” said Woitock.
