The American Red Cross Blood Drive, set to run on Feb. 18 and 19, has been postponed due to minor confusion. Since 2005, UMD’s Med Club and Gamma Sigma Sigma have teamed up with the Red Cross to host drives every October and February. Public Relations Officer of the Med Club Alison Neal was pleased to be helping out with the drive this year. “There’s a lot of potential for blood drives on campus,” said Neal. “There’s always such a diverse group of people that want to come and give blood.”
The anticipated drive was scheduled to take place in the Kirby Ballroom, but as it turns out, the dates got mixed up. President of the Pre-Med Club Sarah Diekmann was in charge of coordinating the drive. The Ballroom was reserved a week earlier than the Red Cross was planningto come. “It’s upsetting that the drive got cancelled, but it is really out of our control and no one’s fault,” said Diekmann.
Gamma Sigma Sigma member Annie Heggernes is very understanding of the whole situation. “I am very aware that miscommunication happens,” said Heggerens. “It is just disappointing when such a positive event gets canceled. For this event, we had the members of Gamma Sigma Sigma and the Med Club ready and willing to help out and show their support.”
Heggerens said that within two days, they already had over 40 people pre-registered to donate. Despite the cancellation, Heggerens would like to thank everyone who had registered and apologize for any inconvenience the cancellation might have caused. The Med Club and Gamma Sigma Sigma will continue in their efforts to reschedule the drive. Diekmann said that they are hoping to reschedule the blood drive for sometime in April.
