The man who entered lecture hall Montague 70 on Wednesday Feb. 20, made his first court appearance on Monday where he was committed, according to St. Louis County case records.
The preliminary probable cause hearing of Shawn Patrick Frederick, 36, of Duluth, was held before Judicial Officer Gerald E. Maher. Before the hearing, Frederick was being held at the Miller Dwan Medical Center, according to the records.
The St. Louis County Commission of Health and Human Services asked Maher that Frederick serve six months in a treatment facility for mental health issues because they saw him as a threat to society.
This is not the first time Frederick has had encounters with the law. In 2006, he was charged with four accounts of second degree assault with a dangerous weapon. However, he was acquitted on all charges due to mental incompetency, according to the case records.
Records also reveal that Frederick was charged for drug possession and the sale of small amounts of marijuana only six days before his appearance at UMD. The court labeled this a petty misdemeanor and ordered Frederick to pay a $132 fine.
