Record winning streak still alive for women's hockey

Fourteen was the lucky number this weekend for the UMD women's hockey team as they set a school record for consecutive wins. Their sweep of the University of North Dakota sets them up to continue this streak next weekend and extend the new record to 15.
Fourteen was wild, as that was the total number of pucks put in the net this weekend, and with the Bulldogs scoring eight on Friday and five on Saturday, it was a solid showing for the hometown team.
"We are playing with pride, great effort, great chemistry," said head coach Shannon Miller. She went on to say that all the UMD coaches are proud of the new team record, but the way they are playing with pride, effort and chemistry is what they are really proud of.
Friday night was when the contest between these two opponents began, and with no goals scored after one period it looked to be a close game.
That was until the second period started and the Bulldogs opened up the flood gates to score four goals. "Our team is playing with great chemistry and clicking on the ice," said junior Sara O-Toole. She also said that the team is doing a lot of the little things right on the ice, and that's what has helped with their success.
Within the first minute of the third period, sophomore Elin Holmlov scored the fifth UMD goal, adding to the scoring frenzy. North Dakota would finally respond with a goal in the third, but it was quickly overshadowed by goals from junior Myriam Trepanier and freshman Jocelyne Larocque, giving the Bulldogs the solid 8-1 final score.
"The girls have overcome a lot of obstacles this year, lopsided scores and tough games, but they keep persevering," said Miller.
Saturday was just another example of that, with game two of the series with the Sioux starting out scoreless in the first period; it seemed yet again that we could see a close game at hand. The Bulldogs quickly put that behind them in the second, with five goals being scored throughout the period.
With UMD only giving up 15 shots on net all night, their whole scheme was working and they were able to solidify their sweep of North Dakota.
"All opponents in our conference are respected," said O-Toole. "We just need to keep working on the little things, you can't be perfect,"
For the last 14 games, that has been true for the Bulldogs, but they will look to improve upon that record next weekend with a conference series at Ohio State.
