Dorm room decorating brings Christmas to college living
BY KENDRA RICHARDS | STATESMAN STAFF WRITER
Christmas is a joyous time for most of us. Many students look forward to a month off of school where they can relax at home with family and actually enjoy the snow. One thing many people enjoy about the holidays is seeing all of the beautiful lights, decorations and the extremes some people go to.
However, students don't have to wait to go home to see and enjoy such decorations. Although there are restrictions, residents are allowed to decorate their dorm rooms and on-campus apartments. A lot of people take advantage of this for various reasons.
"It's fun to decorate. My roommates and I decorated our friends' door, and it makes me feel crafty," said sophomore Heather Tollefson.
Tollefson's own decorations were simple: a miniature Christmas tree with a short string of lights above it. Those who decorated had a common response of, "it's fun." The holiday season puts most people in a jolly mood, and decorating to set that atmosphere can be fun.
People who chose to decorate have small trees in their rooms, and a few have lights, garland and little knick knacks; but many people have no decorations at all.
"We mostly didn't want to pay for the decorations," said sophomore Jane Dormanen. Money was definitely a common issue for students. "We just don't have the money, and we don't want to go out and get the decorations," said sophomore Amy Williams.
Some people also said that they were worried about violating the restrictions that the university sets for Christmas decorations. "We were going to put some lights around the window, but we open and close our curtains a lot and we thought it might be a problem because the decorations aren't supposed to touch the curtains," said sophomore Allison Schoenfelder.
Whether they went all out or had a simple little tree, many students said that they enjoy seeing the decorations up all around, and that it helps anticipate the long-awaited break that is rapidly approaching.
They can be at home and enjoy the decorations there as well-ones that they didn't have to pay for or set up themselves.
