opening this Friday.
The student run organization “VDay UMD” is putting on a couple shows this weekend to help stop violence against women. “The Vagina Monologues” will take place at 7:30 p.m this Friday and at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Bohannon 90, directed by UMD student Linda Gokee. V-Day is a grassroots movement to prevent violence against women. All proceeds from the show will go to the organization Programs to Aid Victims of Sexual Assault (PAVSA). “The Vagina Monologues” is a play designed to raise awareness of female sexuality, violence against women and women empowerment. The play consists of a series of monologues about different women and different situations. It is used as a way for people to hear the voices of women who wouldn’t normally be heard, according to the cast. “We want people to talk about [the show],” said cast member Arielle Schnur.
Although “The Vagina Monologues” is about women, the play is not just for women, but for anyone who wishes to come. The cast emphasizes that they want people to talk about the things in the show. They don’t believe feminism is talked about enough. They want to give the “vword” back its power. The 12 members of the play hope for a great turnout this year. This will be the 10th anniversary since “The Vagina Monologues” was written. It is a show that produced internationally every year, although it has only been done a few times here at UMD. The members of the show advise people not to be embarrassed by the show, which is designed to
bring attention to women’s topics while being forthcoming about the facts. “People were already clamoring for tickets a couple weeks ago before spring break,” said cast member McKayla Boelter. “We are hoping for a packed audience for both nights.”
V-Day dates vary in different places but most dates are somewhere between February and March, according to the members of the show. The doors will open 30 minutes before each show.
