Rep Eli Sailer

Name: Eli Sailer-Haugland

Major: Computer Science BA

What you like to do (hobbies, backgrounds, etc.)?

I always love meeting new people all the time and hanging out with others. I always like to get out and explore Duluth and what it has to offer. When other students are confused and stuck with their homework, (if possible) I always like to help them out because it's not only helping the individual who's learning or relearning the material from a different perspective, it also allows me to prove to myself that I know the content.

What makes you qualified as a leader of your peers?

In my school community, I always like to be the person everyone can go to whether they need help or just someone to talk to. I am a very extroverted person, so I am able to talk to everyone regardless of their personality and identity. When someone has a major issue involving the school, there is no doubt that I'll be one of the students (of the many who are in or will be in student association) who bring the issue up to the SA board. My goal is always to get the things I need to get done in a timely and efficient manner as I avoid to put work into the realm of procrastination.

Why you believe you will work well within SA as the Freshmen Representative?

I believe that through my leadership skills in my school's student council (6 years) has allowed me to grow the skills required to act upon events of all kinds that Student Associated works with. One of my goals in this position is to make sure the student body of UMD has the most memorable and best time in their years of college. With my leadership skills, my responsible and important commitment to work, and my extroverted personality, I believe that I can contribute a unique perspective to UMD and Student Association.

What you like to do (hobbies, backgrounds, etc.)?

Besides the common watching Netflix and hanging out with friends, I love to watch movies, try new foods, and travel. I also love hiking and taking in all the amazing sights to see around the north shore. I love staying busy and being around passionate people.

What makes you qualified as a leader of your peers?

I have always had a passion for representing the student body and did so in high school. I had the amazing honor of representing the North East division of student councils in Minnesota the past 2 years and loved it. I am also an event coordinator at a resort on the north shore and practice my leadership skills, doing that.

Why you believe you will work well within SA as the Freshmen Representative?

I am a quick learner and experienced in the culture of Student Associations. I feel that I will bring a passionate and positive perspective to the association and do everything I can to represent the freshmen class as completely as possible. I look forward to working with other association members and learning from them in how best to represent the class.

What you like to do (hobbies, backgrounds, etc.)?

I personally enjoy talking with literally anyone who’s around me. I enjoy hammocking in every season but during the winter is my favorite time to Mock. I enjoy going to religious Youth organizations and listening on what they value and believe, as it’s very interesting hearing where people come from.

What makes you qualified as a leader of your peers?

I believe what makes me qualified is that I’m a very honest person who won’t hide things from you. I also believe myself to be a fairly confident person and not shy as I love talking with people and hearing from them. I believe I’m a pretty capable person with handling responsibilities as I’ve juggled working and volunteering at different establishments for most my high school life and I enjoy being active.

Why you believe you will work well within SA as the Freshmen President?

I believe I will be able to work well with others as I’m a pretty decent listener and I’m willing to learn more about others and the problems they may face. I’m willing to listen to those around me and help be the voice for those who aren’t being heard. I love helping people and volunteering, and I see this as another opportunity for me to help you.

Name: Logan Robert Kalis

Major: Undecided

What you like to do (hobbies, backgrounds, etc.)?

I enjoy getting out and exploring nature, Bagley and Chester parks around campus are truly beautiful. But I'm also a huge nerd who enjoys playing video games and hanging with friends. Marvel and DC have been huge franchises that have defined me and my morals. I'm a very science driven person, but I'm also very connected with the Lutheran Faith..

What makes you qualified as a leader of your peers?

In my opinion, I'm a hard working person who likes to put others before myself. I've made a lot of friends simply for the reason that I can't stand to see somebody cry which shows my compassion for others I think. I also was the student director of my high schools theater department and was in National Honors Society. But honestly, this isn't about me winning or losing, it's about bettering our class in any way that I can.

Why you believe you will work well within SA as the Freshmen Representative?

I think that I'll work well within SA because I'm a very good listener, but I'm not afraid to speak my mind when needed. I'm here to represent the whole 2022 class, not just the nerds, or the quiet kids, or the jocks, everybody. I want everybody's voice to be heard, no matter the size of it and I think that's what the SA wants. Bettering students lives are what they are here for, so now I'm here to help too..

What you like to do (hobbies, backgrounds, etc.)?

A few things I enjoy doing in my free time are hiking, water skiing, alpine ski racing, sailing with my family, and hanging out with my friends. During my senior year of high school I was an ambassador for my town and spent many hours volunteering in my community. Over all I like to surround myself with fun, positivity, and laughter.

What makes you qualified as a leader of your peers?

I would make a qualified leader for my peers because I am able to really listen and understand people. I try hard to work with honesty and connect with as many of my peers as possible. As for my qualifications, during high school I was an Ambassador for the city of New London, I was the historian for my student council, I was on the senior executive board of the student council, I was on prom committee, and a captain of both my Alpine Ski racing team (all four year of high school) and Tennis team (Senior year). I always put my best foot forward and go the extra mile so that the best outcome possible is attained.

Varsity Tennis- Captain, Varsity Showchoir, Varsity Basketball, Junior Varsity Gymnastics- Captain, Peer Ministry- small group leader, Youth Ministry- small group leader, Women's Society- president, Student Ambassadors- led a walkout against gun violence, Varsity A Capella- section leader.
What initiatives do you think UMDSA should pursue next year?
I believe that the main initiative that UMDSA should pursue should be campus-wide inclusion and equality. Although this campus is 85% white, I believe that tolerance and inclusivity ought to be the main goal. This inclusion and tolerance would benefit the learning community and general atmosphere throughout UMD.
What qualities do you have that would benefit both UMDSA and the student body?
I am a very open-minded person. This would benefit the UMDSA because I am very open to hearing what others have to say. On the other hand, I am a very outspoken individual. This would allow new ides to be respectfully brought to the table.

What activities have you been involved in, and what were the positions held?
Varsity sports:Cross country, Track/Field, Basketball and Football, Student council, and I was chosen to represent my city at Legion Boys state.I went to a small school which did not offer really anything outside of sports so I am looking forward to getting involved at UMD.
What initiatives do you think UMDSA should pursue next year?
We had a required online courses on drinking/drugs/,sexual conduct and finances before classes started, which I thought was valuable information. I think it would be helpful to add a class on different cultures/religions that could entail history and traditions of other cultures/religions, the correct pronunciations of terms important to other cultures/religions, and basic facts. It would be a challenge to not miss an important culture/religion, or to know what to include however it would give everyone a chance to connect, and provide a way for us to all understand each other. Being a freshman, I am still learning all that UMD has to offer and I would love to work with others to pursue initiatives that are relevant.
What qualities do you have that would benefit both UMDSA and the student body?
I am punctual, open minded, and a man of integrity, I want to be involved at UMD, and I recognize that it takes people doing their best, volunteering, working with others, and giving up their time and talents to make organizations.
