Undergrad Update

September 12, 2011

Greetings from the Office of Student Life. It's my favorite time of year when all things seem possible - straight A's, perfect class attendance, and a year rich with great experiences. Welcome to the Undergrad Update! This is UMD's electronic newsletter, designed to keep you informed and up-to-date about activities on campus and in the Duluth community. It's one way of learning about the events and activities to help you make those possibilities a reality!

There are a number of reasons for this format - first, it limits the information you receive to a weekly digest of events and activities. It's anti-spam! Second, the electronic format is paperless and supports UMD's commitment to sustainability. Finally, the newsletters are archived at the Undergrad Update website!  It's easy for you to find, so please consider bookmarking the site.

So now it's your turn - read up, jump in, and get engaged! Here's to a great academic year.

Wishing you success,

Lisa Ann Erwin, PhD
Vice Chancellor for Student Life

BreatheFree UMD
The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) is committed to providing a safe, clean and healthy environment for its students, staff and faculty. Considering the wealth of research documenting health risks of smoking, and with strong recommendation of the Student Health Advisory Committee, UMD adopted a smoke-free policy in 2007.  The policy states "Smoking is prohibited on all UMD property.  The smoking ban includes indoor facilities and the campus grounds, as well as University vehicles."  Beginning this fall, students that violate the policy will be required to take an educational module, which includes a $25 registration fee.

Be Skeptical about Phish!
Please be alert to email phishing attempts, which try to fool you into providing private information such as your Internet password, banking information, or other information that might lead to identity theft.

UMD ITSS is scanning email before it is delivered and tagging any suspicious email in the subject line with [phish?].  There is no need to call or email ITSS when you see a message like this.  Unless you have a good reason to believe it is legitimate, you should simply delete the
message.  If you receive a message you aren't sure about, feel free to ask ITSS.

Please know that no reputable business, including the University of Minnesota, will ask you to provide personal information via email. In particular, guard your passwords, bank numbers, social security numbers, and similar data, and do not provide it via email.  You should also avoid clicking on a web link in a suspicious message.
