EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW

13th Annual Hate Crimes Vigil
Friday, October 7th marked the 13th Anniversary of the brutal beating of 21 year-old Laramie, Wyoming college student, Matthew Shepard. When Matthew died on October 12th, 1998 hate crimes vigils were held around the world, including here at UMD and was lead by the University Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Alliance, now know as the Queer and Allied Students Union (QASU). The 13th Annual Hate Crimes Vigil at UMD will be Wednesday, October 12th  at 5 p.m. in the Multicultural Center.

Renters Rights Forum
Do you know your rights as a renter?  Do you have questions about your lease, utilities, or landlord?   These answers and more can be found out on October 11th at 7 pm in Chem 200 at the Renters Rights Forum.  This event will feature professional attorney Mike Vraa from HOME Line - A nonprofit Minnesota statewide tenant advocacy organization.   He will be available to answer all of the questions you may have about any renting issue, and he will have his book available for purchase after the forum.   Admission is free and open to all. 
 
Annual Depression Screening 
Wednesday, October 12, Ballroom, 1-3pm.  The goal of this event is to raise awareness of depression, to educate people about the signs and symptoms of depression, and to inform UMD Students about services available for treatment and counseling.  Students will have the opportunity to complete a screening tool, and to meet one-on-one with a counselor.

Buddhist Meditation Club
Come learn to meditate! And pick up a little knowledge about Buddhism as well. One hour meetings will be held, which include a brief talk on an aspect of Buddhism, half hour led meditation, and a short discussion/reflection afterwards. The meeting times for the semester are as follows:

Tuesday 5:00-6:00
Wednesday 2:00-3:00
Thursday 5:00-6:00
 
All meetings are held in the TV lounge next to the Multi Cultural Center. Cushions are provided, all you need to bring is an interest and an open mind!

UMD LaBounty Entrepreneur Competition
Have a great business idea that you would like to explore in further detail? Want professional feedback on your idea? You could have the chance to win $100 if your business idea is in the top five, as well as gain valuable entrepreneurship experience. Submit a one page business idea, that summarizes your product or service, why people will love it, and how it will make money, along with a simple registration form to LSBE Student Affairs (111A). Entries are due by Wednesday, October 26th, at 3:30 pm. After being reviewed by faculty, entrepreneurs and investors winners will be announced at the Entrepreneurship Club meeting on Wednesday, November 9th, at noon in LSBE 165. Please visit the website for more details.
