Community Involvement Fair

Students interested in volunteering or acquiring a service-learning placement will have the opportunity to explore the possibilities and connect with over 50 community organizations and schools. There will be opportunities to serve in education, environmental sustainability, social justice, animal welfare, health care, and art and culture. PAL Project

The Office of Civic Engagement is implementing a new tutoring and mentoring program this spring, called The PAL Project. With the help of various partners, we will be able to directly place UMD students, such as yourself, at Duluth public schools, where you will be tutoring and mentoring children who need additional academic support.

If you are interested, please attend our Community Involvement Fair, which will be held on February 2nd, from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM in the Kirby Ballroom. If you wish to participate in PAL you should plan on stopping by.

Expectations for UMD students:

  • Register yourself and your school site with the Office of Civic Engagement's online registration system
  • Complete an application, which may include references and background check consent
  • Serve weekly at a school, and (as possible) be matched 1:1 with a student(s)
  • Serve 18-20 hours over a period of 10 weeks (includes 2 hours of training during the week of 2/20). You are not expected to serve during ISD 709 or UMD breaks, or if the schools are being closed due to weather
  • Complete any on-site orientation/training
  • Complete required evaluation(s) from ISD 709, Office of Civic Engagement and/or course instructor.

Study Abroad 101

Attend Study Abroad 101 and learn the basics of studying abroad at UMD. This is the first step you should take if you are planning on participating in a study abroad experience. This session is open to all students and there is no need for registration, just show up!

Get immediate feedback on your resume, no appointment necessary! These 10-15 minute sessions are for students who already have a written resume and have reviewed the Resume Guidelines in the Career Handbook. You MUST bring a paper copy of your resume to the session, and then receive feedback from Career Services staff.

If you are a beginning resume writer, develop your resume prior to attending one of these sessions by using the Resume Writing section of the Career Handbook.

This critically-acclaimed production chronicles the friendship between Jim Burden and a young Bohemian woman named Antonia as it blossoms in the windswept prairies of the American Midwest in their small town of Black Hawk, Nebraska. This award-winning adaptation of a favorite American novel by Willa Cather has captured hearts and minds across the Midwest.

Illusion Theater was founded in 1974 and presents its season on the 8th floor of the Hennepin Center for the Arts in downtown Minneapolis. Since the beginning, Producing Directors Michael Robins and Bonnie Morris have led Illusion Theater in illuminating the illusions, myths, and realities of our times and in using the power of theater to catalyze personal and social change. In thirty-five years, Illusion has generated over 500 plays, developed thousands of artists, and created ground-breaking educational works. Plays developed at Illusion have been produced in theaters throughout the world. Illusion's work has catalyzed conversations in living rooms, kitchens, coffee houses, and board rooms, and has led to transformations in policy, in organizations, in students, and in individuals.

Leadership Opportunities

Interested in a great student leadership opportunity?

The First Year Experience & Students in Transition Office is looking for self-motivated students to serve as advisors for the Adivsement & Registration (A&R) program this spring. The A&R program serves new incoming UMD students. The student advisor's role is to assist new students with the advisement and registration process for their first term at UMD. To qualify for the position you must:

  • Be available to work from 1-4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday program days this semester (March 6th and 27th; April 3rd, 17th, 19th and 24th).
  • Have attended UMD for a full year and be a full time student.
  • Have a UMD grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  • Be available for 4 training sessions on Friday afternoons from 3-5p.m. beginning Jan. 27th.
  • Demonstrate a good work ethic.
  • Learn to Advise in all UMD Colleges
