Michelle is a junior at UMD and is studying Financial Planning and Marketing. During the spring semester of 2016, Michelle studied abroad in London. During her 5 months in Europe, she traveled to 11 countries, trekked through the mountains, swam in the sea, hiked on glaciers, and met many wonderful people along the way. She also learned more about herself than she could have imagined. Now, she is eager to help other students grow in new ways by leaping outside their comfort zones. When not studying, working, or traveling, Michelle enjoys baking, dancing, stargazing, exploring Duluth, working out, writing, and shopping.
Most memorable view during your study abroad experience?
When I visited Vernazza, Italy, I booked two nights in a secluded hut overlooking the colorful village. It was approximately 600 steps to reach my little oasis, but once I made it there, I felt like I was on top of the world. I also had a private wrap-around balcony — perfect for watching the sunset. While sitting there, I realized how insanely grateful I am for the study abroad opportunity.
What makes you happy?
Paddling around MN lakes, when people enjoy my bakes, taking afternoon tea in England, visiting new places, and impromptu dance parties with my sisters.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
A break from routine and an awaiting adventure gets me excited to start my day. But nothing causes me to jump out of bed quite like my favorite breakfast: oatmeal mixed with banana and peanut butter. Try it, it’s delicious!
Best advice to future study abroad student?
Develop a “Yes!” philosophy. Challenge yourself by saying yes in situations where you’ll experience new places, people, and activities. You’ll almost always be glad you did. And if not, you’ll still learn something about yourself.
What’s the next item on your bucket list?
A month of travel through either Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe.
