Admissions Procedures - MSW Program

To be considered for admission to the MSW program, the applicant must provide the following information:

1. Two copies of the Application for Admission to the University of Minnesota Graduate School.

2. Two official copies of transcripts from any college attended.

3. A $55.00 application fee ($75.00 for non-U.S. citizens).

4. Completed MSW Application Form. (Provided in application materials from Graduate School)

5. Three recommendations from former instructors, professional colleagues or employers.
    *(Should be received by Social Work Department by January 14, 2005.)

Note: At least one recommendation should be an academic reference. (If you are unable to obtain an academic reference, please include one reference who can specifically comment on your academic skills and abilities. If you have taken any "Non-Degree Seeking" social work courses, you need to include a recommendation from the instructor of one of these courses. Please complete Request for Recommendation forms enclosed and give one to each person providing a reference. Each recommendation form must include a recommendation letter.

6. A personal statement related to your application for admission to the MSW program (approximately 2-3 pages). The personal statement should:

  1. Provide a brief biographical sketch including personal, family, and past experiences that have influenced your decision to enter the social work profession. Why are you interested in becoming a MSW Social Worker? What personal qualities do you possess that will allow you to contribute to the social work profession?
  2. Describe human service, volunteer and/or paid work experiences which have contributed to your interest in social work.
  3. Explain your career goals and the professional activities in which you plan to engage after completing your graduate studies.
  4. Present any additional information you would like the Admissions Committee to consider in formulating recommendations concerning your admission.

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR FALL 2005 IS JANUARY 14, 2005; APPLICATIONS, TRANSCRIPTS, AND APPLICATION FEES MAY BE RETURNED IF RECEIVED AFTER JANUARY 15TH.

THE APPLICANT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSURING THAT ALL REQUIRED MATERIALS, INCLUDING RECOMMENDATION LETTERS, ARE RECEIVED BY THE JANUARY 14, 2005 DEADLINE.
