Agency Description:

St. Michael’s Health & Rehab Center is a skilled nursing home which serves individuals age 18 and older with physical and mental disabilities.  It provides skilled and custodial nursing care which includes physical, occupational and speech therapy. The main age of the population is age 65 and older. St. Michael's is part of the Benedictine Health System, a Catholic health care organization entrusted with furthering the health care mission of the Benedictine Sisters of Duluth, Minnesota, which provides a spectrum of services with special concern for the poor and powerless.  The System is committed to witness to God’s love for all people by providing high-quality services in a compassionate environment that enhances human worth.

Description of Field Activities

At St. Michael’s there is a variety of educational experience available.  Interns will have the opportunity to work with mainly the geriatric population who are dealing with health issues (physical and emotional).  There will be opportunity for individual casework and also the potential for group work.  The intern will also be exposed to various assessments, i.e. Geriatric Depression Scale and the Mini-Mental Status Exam, along with other facility assessments.   The intern will have the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of psychiatric issues faced by the residents and the various treatments. The intern will be able to work with a resident and be involved in developing a plan of care for that individual.   They will also be exposed to a interdisciplinary team in the health care setting and gain an understanding of the social workers role.  The intern will also be involved in discharge planning which will give then an understanding of the community resources available and give them an opportunity to network with other community agencies.    The intern will also be exposed to death and dying issues and providing counseling for the resident as well as their family.
