||Mary Ness - Foster Care
The mission of St. Louis County Social Services states that they are committed to providing services to families and individuals that help support and maintain the family unit. The Foster Care unit provides services to individuals and families interested in being foster families, including relatives.
|Description of Field Activities
Field I students will gain experience licensing, re-licensing, and doing emergency licenses with foster families and individuals. This includes conducting home studies and doing home inspections. Students will also attend placement meetings where children entering foster care and available foster families are assessed and discussed to make the best available placement. Students in Field I will place children in foster homes with the family worker to discuss expectations, rules, etc and provide support for the foster family.
Field II students can be involved in planning and implementing training opportunities for foster care families and individuals. There could potentially be opportunities to work on recruiting foster families of color and providing supportive services to these families. They will also be involved in continuous communication with on-going child protection workers regarding the well-being of the children in foster care. Students will meet with foster care families and take phone calls regarding any concerns with children in care and provide intervention as necessary.
The field for St. Louis County foster care would be more appropriate for Field II students. There are many situations where critical thinking is needed on multi-level systems. Students will need a level of autonomy with tasks. Foster care deals directly with policies from the state and county level.
