Social Work Department Response to Facebook Incident at UMD,
The Department of Social Work faculty are deeply saddened by
the recent racist and homophobic Facebook incident that occurred
on the UMD campus. Incidences like this should never happen.
We feel it is important for us to acknowledge how this most recent
incident has hurt, not only all members of the Black community,
but all of us who care about members of oppressed groups. We
have to do better at eliminating racism and the other forms of
discrimination and oppression. These expressions may stem from
ignorance, or fear, but the bottom line is that they show a deep
lack of respect for fellow human beings. This incident presents,
once again, an opportunity for all of us to look at the ways
in which we contribute to a climate that breeds intolerance and
fosters a climate of hate. If we don't actively speak out, we
inadvertently support this intolerance. Social work has long
been a profession focused on respect and social justice. Our
professional code of ethics is embedded with this responsibility,
which we try to instill in all our students. Those of us in the
Social Work Department are committed to do all that we can to
create an environment where Black students, staff and faculty
and other marginalized groups feel welcome, safe and valued.
We want to acknowledge the pain this incident has caused and
hope that a new climate of respect and understanding will come
out of it.
