The B.F.A. in Design and Technology is a rigorous program focused at training students in specialized emphases for careers in the professional theatre and/or advanced degree training in a Master of Fine Arts program. Successful students are given opportunities to design in the UMD Theatre main season and graduate with a well developed portfolio of both realized designs and project work.

UMD offers three areas of emphasis:
Scene Design and Technology
Training in this area focuses on the development of creative processes and skills used in the interpretation, design and construction of theatrical scenic elements.
Students who develop the requisite skill and show promise as designers have the opportunity to design scenic elements for both the UMD Theatre main season and Stage 2 productions.
Lighting and Sound Design and Technology
Training in this area focuses on the development of creative processes and skills used in the interpretation, design and implementation of lighting for the theatre.
Students who develop the requisite skill and show promise as designers have the opportunity to design lighting and operate the light board for both the UMD Theatre main season and Stage 2 productions
Costume Design and Technology
Training in this area focuses on the development of creative processes and skills used in the interpretation, and design and construction of theatrical costumes.
Design and construction courses are supplemented with a variety of craft and technology courses such as millinery, crafts, stage makeup, and fabric dyeing and painting.
Students who develop the requisite skill and show promise as designers have the opportunity to design costumes and makeup for both the UMD Theatre main season and Stage 2 productions
