#308. Barbizon Trees in Winter. 20 x 25, oil on canvas, relined. "Gilbert Munger" lower left. Offered for sale in 2019 on eBay by merchant "allkinds4allsorts", located in Leesburg VA, and bought by a California collector. The merchant states that the painting was acquired in Virginia. The painting is visually unusual. One might think it is unfinished, but it being signed dictates otherwise. Painting #34, dated 1888, and painting #17 are clearly the same two trees in a different season, with the odd transformation that the image is reversed horizontally. This might mean that Munger intended this one as the master painting from which to prepare an etching, which image would need to be reversed. Never-the-less, the image here is striking. The painting would be at home in a more modern setting than most 19th C. landscapes. Conserved by Chelsea Restorations, New York City, in 2019. Image from Chelsea Restorations photo.
