In the year 2000, the Tweed Museum of Art celebrated its 50th anniversary. From the museum's core collection of 600 European and American works of art acquired by George P. Tweed (1871–1946) and donated to the University of Minnesota Duluth by his widow, Alice Tweed Tuohy between 1950 and 1973, collections at the Tweed Museum of Art now include over 6,000 works of art.

Fifty of these works of art are presented here according to four major themes: Stories in Art, People and Places, Art and Environment, and the Language of Art. These works which were created in different cultures, at different times, and for vastly different reasons, can be compared and discussed in terms of how they relate to the theme as well as in terms of their relationship to particular cultures, locations, and historical periods.

Our permanent collection is also home to 374 images of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force donated to the Tweed Museum of Art by Potlatch Corporation in 1981.
