Internship Application (PDF)
Each semester the museum studies internship program is available for up to 20 students. The program is open to students from all disciplines including Art and Design, Art History, History, English, Marketing, Education, Anthropology, Communications, American Indian Studies, Interdisciplinary, International, and Cultural Studies and other related fields. Students from UMD as well as other colleges and universities are considered.
Students are required to complete an application, which is
available online and at the museum, including why they want to intern at the museum and to request two letters of recommendation from faculty members and/or employers. Applicants are then interviewed by the Museum Educator and if accepted given a permission number to register for the course through the Department of Art and Design (Art 5997 Art Museum Internship). Students may also register for an internship through their own department. Students may register for 1-3 credits with a corresponding 3-9 hours worked each week of the semester.
Included in these hours is an online seminar component to the internship where various aspects of museum work are introduced.
Each student works the remaining hours based on the museum’s hours of operation and the student’s availability.
Currently, our internship program is focused on a collection inventory and assessment project. All of our interns participate in this project as well as conducting other work throughout the semester based on the intern’s area of interest.
