"The Unknown Craftsman: A Japanese Insight into Beauty," By Soetsu Yanagi and Bernard Leach

The Japanese Soetsu Yanagi and British Bernard Leach were friends and collaborators for five decades as potters, as the two brought the traditional Japanese aesthetics of beauty into modern form in ceramics.  This book offers seventy-six plates of objects illustrating the creative process and the integration of beautifully crafted pieces into daily living.

Broc Allen is a wood-fired ceramic artist in the north woods of Wisconsin using an anagama kiln he built ten years ago.  He lectures on the Asian influence on American studio ceramics post-1950.  He has exhibited his art in the Duluth area, as well as in China and Japan.  “There are no rules only concepts.  It is in the making, not the saying.” –Artist’s Credo

Opening Reception: Chance with Kathy McTavish
October 19, 2017 | 6:00-8:00 PM
Main Gallery

Kathy McTavish is a composer and media artist who specializes in creating interactive, multi-channel video and sound environments that are released online, in gallery spaces, and behind performance events. McTavish created Chance, a site-specific installation for the Tweed Museum’s Sax Gallery. It is a synergetic installation composed of six networked machine quartets that combines code, image, and sound to create a cross-sensory experience that seeks to investigate what it “feels” like to inhabit a multitheaded system. A landscape of painted walls and multi-channel sound encloses the viewer. Choreographed by code, a circle of machine quartets investigate chance, emergence, friction, resonance and change.

"The Philosphy of Andy Warhol" By Andy Warhol

“The Philosophy of Andy Warhol” is a pithy reflection by the artist on his life and work in the New York art scene with engimatic comments on the human condition.  Early in the book Warhol writes, "People are always calling me a mirror and if a mirror looks into a mirror, what is there to see?"  Just as with his iconic images, the author holds the dialogue up to the reader to peer into for a look back at one's self.

Sharon Mollerus is a volunteer staff member at the Tweed Museum of Art working in social media and education support.  She has an M.A. in Comparative Literature and is an amateur photographer.
