Fables + PyramidsAdu Gindy, Joy Kops and Peter WeizenggerThrough August 5, 2007 Opening Reception: Sunday, June 3rd, 2:00–4:00pm
The ancient Egyptians lived their entire lives preparing for death. They regarded death not in terms of an end to life and then heaven or hell, but as a continuation of a life on “the other side.” To insure happiness there, one needed to provide physical proof of one’s life on Earth, hence the elaborate tombs filled with objects illustrating the individual’s place in the world.
Fables and Pyramids uses the Egyptian model to focus on the life and passions of a contemporary local Egyptian man using artistic metaphors and personal possessions. Gindy, Kops, and Weizenegger create contemporary renditions of ancient beliefs, updating the Egyptian rites to accommodate the modern physical world and sensibilities.
The Duluth News Tribune ran a feature on the exhibition on May 26, 2007.
