Force of the North:
Selections from the Potlatch Collection of Royal Canadian Mounted Police Illustrations

May 16 – September 6, 2009

The Potlatch Corporation, formerly known as The Northwest Paper Company, commissioned over 350 illustrated works featuring the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from the early thirties through the seventies. The main focus was to use the vibrant red tunics worn by the Mounties and the vivid hues of the outdoor landscapes as advertisements to showcase the company’s superior paper quality. In 1981 the majority of these original works were donated to the Tweed Museum of Art, University of Minnesota Duluth.

This year’s exhibition has been developed from conception to installation by the museum’s nineteen interns. Interns brought their knowledge from history, anthropology and cultural studies together to display the Mountie from his beginning as an advertisement and illustrate how he evolved over time by featuring a selection of original paintings, advertisements and Mountie archival materials.

Something people from the upper northwest can relate to these bold images of adventure that capture the heroism of the Mounties as well as the pristine north woods landscape. For over 60 years, the famed Mountie illustrations have been featured on an annual collector’s calendar, which are available along with other Mountie merchandise in the museum store.
