STUDENT
EMPLOYEES
Shift Differential (from UMD Student Employment Supervisor's Handbook) - Student
employees who are assigned to work regularly scheduled shifts
of at least six hours in duration are eligible for a shift differential
of $.60 per hour. These work shifts must begin before 6:00 a.m. or end
on or after 7:00 p.m.
Regularly Scheduled Shift - this is a very common term and is meant to
distinguish between a regular or defined work schedule from those that
are on-call, or cover variable work hours (e.g. special events).
A good working definition is as follows: "Working hours scheduled
in a recurring pattern on a continuing basis."
Student employees are only eligible for shift differential if they work
a regularly scheduled shift that begins before 6:00 a.m. or ends on or
after 7:00 p.m.
CLARIFICATION: Student employees who work on-call or variable schedules
are [not] eligible for shift differential pay.
All UMD units are required to pay shift differential to student employees
who meet the above criteria.
