WORKSHOPS

  Access Center (Careers in Sign Language Interpreting)
Come to this workshop ready to discover a new language - American Sign Language! You will see sign language interpreters at work and learn about the process of interpreting from both interpreters and deaf consumers. This will be a "hands-on" workshop!!!
  Admissions, Office of (Campus Tour )
Campus tour guides will give you a tour of the UMD campus and residence halls.
  Air Force ROTC (Careers in the Military)
What is it like to be in the service? Do you know that there are different branches in the military? Air Force is one of them and we will find out what it's like to be in the Air Force.

 

Biology, Department of (Careers in Biology)
Which Organ Would You Be Willing to Give Up to Look Like a Barbie Doll? Girls who sign up for this active session will learn how scientists answer questions about biology. They will perform an experiment that will help them realistically assess the health costs of actually being shaped like a Barbie Doll.
 

Communication Sciences & Disorders
In your visit, you will discover what help is available to people who have speech, language, and hearing disorders. This is an interactive session.

 

  Education (Technology Showcase)
You will be shown how to use a digital camera and how to create special effects with digital images.

 

Information Technology Systems and Services (Computer Lab)
What can you do with a background in computing? We will focus on creating your own web page and make it "live" on the Internet. You will learn to surf the World Wide Web.

 

KUMD (Careers in Radio Broadcasting)
You will tour KUMD studio and its facilities, meet with the station manager, meet with a DJ, and staff and talk about their experiences working in both commercial and non-commercial radio.
  Planetarium
At the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium, you will have an introduction to astronomy through the presentation of a slide show. There will also be a tour through the current night sky outlining the main constellations and their myths.

 

Print Services (Careers in Printing & Graphic Design)
If you want to observe how printing and graphic design is done, this is the workshop for you. You will take a tour of the Copy Center plus Print Shop. They will talk about printing and graphic design careers. They will show you how they print materials using the computer.
  Recreational Sports (Careers in Recreational Sports)
Tour the sports and health facilities, meet with professional staff who work in the areas of fitness, aquatics, and intramural sports. Learn about the opportunities for being a recreation professional.
  Shadow Sponsor
The girls shadow their host in the work environments. This is a chance to expose your guest to your everyday working environment and work together. Ask her to help you with a project, help with office work, to interview your co-workers, and note what she discovers.
Statesman (Careers in Newspaper Reporting)
Learn the step-by-step process as to how a newspaper is put together as well as produce one yourselves.
  Women's Resource and Action Center
You will be introduced to the Center. You will discuss what it is they do for the men and women on campus. You will have fun by making a series of creative posters about "Take Our Daughters to Work" that will provide a pictorial representation of what it is you aspire to be when you "Grow up."
