| FERPA Workshop Fri , 10/12 10 :15-11:30 Kirby Ballroom |
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is the
federal regulation that governs student educational records. The
law guarantees students access to their educational records and
provides guidelines regarding the release of and access to those
records by others. Why doesn’t the university send grades
to the parents when they are the ones paying the bills? Shouldn’t
the college inform the parents if a student is ill? This session
will explore the complex federal and state laws that address privacy
of student records. The laws are often confusing, and requests
for student data sometimes appear legitimate when they are not.
There will be time for Q&A.
Facilitator: Tina M.R. Falkner is the Associate Registrar and Chief Privacy Officer for Academic Support Resources at the University of Minnesota and is the key-contact university-wide for student data privacy issues. |
