PARENTAL FMLA LEAVE

 

GUIDELINES FOR EMPLOYEE:

1. Notify UMD Department of Human Resources of the need for FMLA leave at least 30 days prior to the anticipated need. If not possible due to extenuating circumstances, adoption or foster care, notify UMD Human Resources as soon as the need is known.

2. Promptly provide either the Certification of Birth/Care of a Newborn to the health care provider, or the Certification of Adoption or Foster Care Placement to the agency handling the adoption or placement. The employee must have the Certification completed and returned to UMD Department of Human Resources who reviews the FMLA certification for completeness and appropriateness under the rules. All medical forms and information are retained in a separate, confidential file.

TIME ALLOWED FOR BIRTH OR ADOPTION OF A CHILD

MOTHER or FATHER: (All time is pro-rated to appointment) See appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement or Civil Service Rulebook.

TIME OFF ALLOWED FOR PLACEMENT OF A FOSTER CHILD

MOTHER OR FATHER:

• FMLA allows up to 12 weeks of paid/unpaid time
• Paid parental leave is not available. See appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement or Civil Service Rulebook for what paid leave is available.
