Outstanding Service Award
When UMD departments have asked Darrell to build experimental apparatus for them as an administrative professional with industrial engineering, he has designed and built them effectively, acting as a design engineer.
Darrell also produced two dozen very fine butcher clock lab tables for industrial engineering and chemical engineering. These tables were better designed and made than anything they could have afforded to buy.
He has made a positive impact on the department's budget by the way he handled the purchase of several machine tools, saving tens of thousands of dollars and he's also sold machines that were considered worthless for thousands of dollars.
He has designed jigs and fixtures for the labs and student projects that display great innovation. He also built the bent to the Tau Beta Pi that stands outside the main entrance to the Engineering Building. The top of the bent is a toroid (donut shape) which is difficult to make as it is hard to grip the toroid while machining it.
A Computer Science and Engineering member of 30 years had this to say, "Darrell is by far the best engineering technician I have ever worked with in my career."
Because of all this and more, I am proud to present Darrell with this Outstanding Service Award.
